...is great fun, and an exciting treasure hunt
Best time is outgoing tide: along the shoreline you will find: shells washed ashore for example mussels, clams, crabs, barnacles, urchines and sanddollars, and if you are lucky, you may spot a mermaids purse! These shells function also as protection for other sea creatures, please pick up only what you really can carry in your hands. Look out for Japanese hand blown glass ball float, they are always a great find. Exposed tide pools are full with giant green surf anemones, colorful starfish, as well as wonderfully camouflaged Chitons, all parts of the mystical life of the Intertidal zone.
To help you to identify your treasure, ask us, or check our book collection in 'the Chuckling Oyster lounge'. And, if you want to see and understand more about the facinating lives of these creatures, the Ucluelet Aquarium does an amazing job of introducing folk to the dazzling jewels of the deep, a;ong with many open touch pools, that are great, both for children and adults. Combine this outing with a beautiful hike through the Pacific Rim National Park, guaranteed family fun.
