Tofino Bear Watch

BC is the Black Bear Capital of North America!!

British Columbiaâ?¨ has the largest Black Bear population in North America, and Vancouver Island has the densest population of Black Bears in the entire province.â?¨ Vancouver Island Black Bears have been re-classified as a  separate sub-species of Black Bear, now known as the "Island Bear" recognized as the LARGEST of the Black Bear species.

Well, this says it all, not surprisingly, there is a large number of them here, near Tofino, in the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve.

Generally, the surest way of your actually seeing bear is by boat:

Why?, It’s simple really, at low tide they come out of the forest, down to the shore to fish!

You will cruise through the west coast Eden of Clayoquot Sound; enjoy miles of spectacular scenery, marine life, birds, and you’ll see BEARS!!

The advantage of the boats we recommend, comfortable 12 passenger tour boats with an enclosed, heated cabin, two outdoor viewing decks and an onboard washroom.

Except our 'Bear in residence' from early Spring to late summer we often see her on our waterfront, at Clayoquot-Orca Resort Lodge.

Guests that arrive from October thru to late november have the great chance to see the annual salmon spawning. The Hatchery attracts many bears, often with cubs, they are just a few feet from you, feasting on the plentiful fish Smogasbord. Fabulous photographic opportunities.
