The Cold Water Classic is the first Canadian event ever endorsed by the Association of Surfing Professionals, the sport's major governing body, and is part of the association's World Qualifying Series.
Devries hasn’t surfed on the WQS recently and his victory followed a week-long, fairy-tale-like run against 120 of the world’s most promising up-and-coming surfers. In the fifth round Friday, Devries defeated Joan Duru, of France, currently ranked eighth on the WQS tour, and earned a spot in the quarter-finals.Saturday morning, he advanced to the semifinals after defeating Ireland’s Glenn Hall 13.17 points to 10.17 points. Then in the semifinals, he defeated American Cory Lopez, 10.23 points to 6.5 points.
Before he could even make it to shore and still waist-deep in water, Devries was greeted by cheering crowds and mobbed by champagne-toting friends who lifted him onto their shoulders and carried him to shore. They even slung a Canadian flag around his neck. Underneath exploding fireworks, Devries was carried to the judge’s booth for more champagne and the awards’ ceremony...
