Hanging Ten – Tofino is riding the wave of the boarding craze...
Though Tofino has a population of only 1,900 full-time residents, it has 8 surfing shops and 6 surfing schools. Surfers who had the waves to themselves in the eighties and nineties are now the teachers. Tofino’s extraordinary ‘over the top’ setting, and the ocean’s astonishing power combine to make surfing in Tofino an extraordinary visual and physical challenge. The open Pacific delivers stupendous surfing waves year round, with water temperatures fairly consistent throughout the year, which compare with conditions in Northern California.
So! Surfing the waters of Tofino and Clayoquot Sound is a year round sport. Falling off your board may get water up your nose but there are no sharks or coral in the waters around Tofino. Like any demanding sport, it’s a good idea to get a lesson and acquire some basics before jumping in.
Clayoquot-Orca resort is just a seven minute walk to Chestermans Beach, keeners can surf until dark. At Clayoquot-Orca Resort Lodge we’ll board you AND your surf board! We have main floor rooms that especially cater to the surfing crowd, with roofed patios to store gear, a common outside shower for surf boards n’ suits, special beach towels daily, and when you really need to thaw out in a hurry, reserve for a session in our INFRA RED SAUNA.
