If you depart from Vancouver on your way to Tofino, you can choose the ferry from Vancouver North to Nanaimo (Horseshoe Bay - Departure Bay). Reservations are recommended. As alternative choose Vancouver South to Nanaimo (Tsawwassen - Duke Point) via BC Ferries. US sailings are, from Seattle choose the Victoria Clipper, from Port Angeles the Black Ball Ferry and from Anacortes The Washingthon State Ferry.
